Story

’Hellhound on My Trail’ looks to be the only cover on the upcoming album. It’s my humble rendition of a legendary blues song by the most legendary bluesman.

The song has a real resonance with me and my dealings with cancer over the past couple of years. Mortality, paranoia, feeling that you’re walking around on a trap door- it‘s all there. But also there’s this very sweet appreciation of the little things in the lyric that I love.

Lyrics

I got to keep on moving, I got to keep on moving
Blues falling down like hail, blues falling like hail
And the days keep worrying me, there's a hellhound on my trail

Hellhound on my trail

If today was Christmas eve, if today was Christmas Eve
And tomorrow was Christmas day, tomorrow was Christmas Day
All I would need is my little sweet rider
Just to pass the time away, to pass the time away

You sprinkled hot foot powder, sprinkled hot foot powder

All around my door, all around my door

It keeps me with a ramblin' mind rider
Every old place I go, every place I go

I can tell the wind is risin', tell the wind is risin’.

Leaves tremblin' on the tree, tremblin' on the tree
All I need is my little sweet woman
And to keep my company, to keep my company

  • 05:04 Lyrics Lament for the Band

The band was out of luck. They sold the van some gear and an old box truck. They just closed their eyes and kicked that one away. In the day they could pick a song. Make them burn and churn it wouldn’t take them long-to grab that golden pen and make em pay.

But it’s too late. Too late, too late. Outta time and things have changed for the better.

Stu he could spin a tune. Have em crying for more until he hit that spoon. Stole a rented car and head down the road. Took a grand from his brother Dwight. Thought the band would hit and then he’d make it right. Now he’s selling pipe at a headshop in Muscle Shoals.

It‘s too late. Too late, too late. Sure to find the time it takes to forget her.

Well there’s a girl who could make it right. She threw him under the bus on a drinking night. For a chiseled man with a guitar slung real low.

Too late. Too late, too late. Sure to find the time it takes to forget her.

As far as the other three- they got mouths to feed they’re just like you and me. They go on with hat in hand and torrential rain. But when the scene is getting hot, in the corner of a club in a drinking spot, you’ll find a chewed up Polaroid with the most painful stain.

Too late. Too late, too late. Outta time and things have changed for the better. Too late. Too late, too late. Sure to find the time it takes to forget her. Too late. Too late, too late.

  • 03:41 Lyrics Slow Ride to Change Your Mind

I’d never take it from you. But girl I’m gonna try. Minds are always changing. So say you’re coming by. We‘ll take it for what it is, take a slow ride- be the girl I think you is.

Said your wheels been broken. The man he put you through. I got some down time honey. Hey have a drink or two. Said you really don’t think you should. Take a slow ride, say you might wish you would.

I saw the man you want in pictures on line. Well you can justify your actions in time. Well take a slow ride to change your mind babe.

I’ll take the whole night to keep ya. The lamps they’re turning low. It’s been a long time coming, you say you gotta go- and love‘s for the foolish kind. Well take a slow ride, say you might change your mind. Take a slow ride to change your mind.

  • 03:19 Lyrics Reap What You Sow

The moment I left was all that you needed. Things that were said can’t be repeated. Through kitchen windows her finger was upright. She turned down the faucet with emotion in headlights. Reap what you sow. Teach what you know.

All that you wanted paid for your rescue. Some choice indecisions crept up to save you. That gold set I gave you, just some Tiffany thing. A 10 karat lowjack, a 10 karat ring. Reap what you sow. Teach what you know. Ain’t no devil in details. You just reap what you sow.

She only wanted to run. Got friends in school just for fun. Set out this morning she’s gone on down the road. Reap what you sow. Teach what you know. Ain’t no devil in details. You just reap what you sow.

The moment he left that was something she wanted. The devil he brought with the guns that he flaunted. Red lights in windows and scenes from the porch light. The bottles and brothels, and clothes that don’t fit right. Reap what you sow. Teach what you know. No devil in details. You just reap what you sow.

  • 04:02 Lyrics What I've Done to You

I got your remote and old Mastercard. They got a salad machine with a star. I see a man at the scene of a crime, he got a suit it said Fox 59. Dog got up when that beater went through. I’ve seen enough now it’s 4:42. Yeah well all I’m sayin- I feel bad for what I done to you.

i met your friend and I think you could see. All that it was yeah and all it would be. She pulled the strings don’t take no Nancy Drew. Yeah well all I’m sayin- I feel bad for what I done to you. I fell bad for what i’ve done.

The sun it come up, it don’t make a sound, just like the way I left you. Said you ain’t enough, I like what I’ve found, but I’m a fool I beg you. No sleep for so long, someone tell me who is that bird singing to? I feel bad for what I done to you.

Taking cold medicine with a side. In a pint glass that you threw outside. Got whiskey with dreams but the booze it won’t do, and we’re through. Yeah well all I’m sayin- I feel bad for what I done to you. I feel bad for what I’ve done.

  • 04:51 Lyrics Simple Plan

In the morning you call, like a farewell to all. With a ring, another wedding day. I always thought you would come to see the dogs and their dung, and where one day their heads would lay. When he runs will you come undone? You got a simple plan, but he's not a simple man.

You could find with a dance, another death wish romance. You never saw though you wiped your eyes. With every dog you put down, seven more come around. A sugar grin that left no man behind. When he runs, will you come undone? You got a simple plan, but he's not a simple man.

Take a photo if you want, send it off with a special font so people must believe it's true. He got a plan he won't hide, beneath you feed the fool inside of you.

Now the rain fell so long, seemed for August it's wrong. Never saw the water set so high. They said you burned the hound's house down, till the embers hit ground. And the flames they never dried your eyes. When he runs, will you come undone? You had a simple plan, but he's not a simple man. Ain't the first time, won't be the last.

  • 03:55 Lyrics Wolf Cried All the Way to Memphis

Piled in the Fairlane north of Tupelo. Head down 61 with many miles to go. Got a girl in Jackson, say she's got a nice spot. But Hubert done found your Mama in a Clarksdale barber shop. Yeah the Wolf cried all the way to Memphis.

You just might remember when push comes to shove. Anger tears and heartache in the summer of love. She said that Bill McKinley's nothing but the devil's seed. Balled it up and throw it down, said boy you better leave. Yeah the Wolf cried all the way to Memphis.

Where did that son go wrong? Ain't no way that fork tongued devil- he ain't gonna do me wrong.

The times in West Virginia seemed to never stop. You said they'd try to take you down when you're rolling at the top. Blow by the heart break town's with an AM radio. Kinda like smokestack lightning- shining down like gold. Yeah the Wolf cried all the way to Memphis.

  • 03:33 Lyrics That's Alright

Never looked for somebody. Never wanted someone. Then you came that's so funny, And the moment is gone.

It's four in the morning I got a song, it goes on but that's alright.

Don't you change for somebody, and make a fool outta me. You got some bones in the closet. You get some bags in the deal.

It's four in the morning you can't sleep, till you weep. Baby that's alright.

There's gonna be bumps and bones in the road. You stay in the shadows you're gonna get cold. To get what you want babe you gotta be bold.

It's four in the morning you can't sleep, till you weep. Baby that's alright.

It's four in the morning I got a song, it goes on and on. On and on.

  • 04:01 Lyrics Bluejay on the Wrenhouse

Don't disturb my wanting - to foretell my days.  I have heeded warnings - all to feed disdain.

Lord help my mother - her son is so far gone.  Slipping in blood and trouble - all to leave her alone. The sweetest bird was singing - songs I thought were mine.  There's a Blue Jay on the wren house - think I'll lose my mind.

To be forever weeping - it's a thing to sing the blues.  It's quite another - to make another sing those blues for you.

There's danger in drinks and dreaming - with ones you must forsake.  Breathe in your youth and blow out the truth like candles on powder kegs.

The sweetest bird was singing - songs I know were mine.  There's a Blue jay on the wren house - time to leave it behind.

  • 05:00 Lyrics Fine Time

High time for medication.  Spent a long time in the cold.  That girl got me spinning.  I gave her love sublime.  Sent her off just to meet a friend - to meet a friend of mine.

Fine time to pick a friend.  High time to take a fast train outta town.  Fine time to pick a friend.  At one time I gave my love to that thing.

At one time I paid attention.  Always someone else in line.  You want lots of money - now you got the time.  I got a book with another friend - you have a real good time.

I'll save it up for the one night stands - trade it all for the plans I made with you.

  • 03:39 Lyrics Superhot

I don't want to move on - without something she's on.  These hands will never be free from me.  Crazy or not she's still superhot she gotta tat I wanna take a shot.  Crazy or not, that's all that she's got, she got a lot on her mind.

Sometimes you never get in and so I'll never begin.  Just like a hook on the beach, it's always too deep.  Crazy or not, she's still superhot she got a tat I wanna take a shot.  Crazy or not that's all that she's got- she got a lot on her mind.

And I don't want to believe that you're not around.  Sometimes you gotta be seen when you're not in town.

That child is all that you need, she got a soul you can bleed.  Sometimes you gotta be clean in this scene.  Crazy or not, she's still superhot she got a tat I wanna take a shot.  Like it or not that's all that she's got- she got a lot on her mind.

  • 04:14 Lyrics Move On

One is for what you put on, and two is reveal.  Four's what you got to keep on, and free is what you feel.  Take what you want to tear off, walk when you want to walk off and move on.

I'll take every hook you put on, the bait is your freedom.  One day I'll make it go on and eat what you feed 'em.  Say what you want to get out, don't blame me for when I peek out and move on.

You said move on, move on, there's always a way to live on.  Come on, live on, there's always a way to move on.

Tried every way you could find to free up the needle. They all said you never would mind to please all the people.  Tie up your menacing tongue and cry if you want to stay young - so move on.

    chorus

Plan for most any price- save so many lives- and stlll might see your head on a spike.

    chorus

-that's not a way to move on.

  • 03:13 Lyrics System

Hey now run down the system.  Hold out for repeat, make no decision.  It's all fine.

It pains me to wash off the tension, it gets on your fingers with no rhyme or reason.  It's alright.  I made it so fine.

Grindstones at ten cents a truckload.  Downsize the legions and tear off to creole.  It's all fine.

Nine days outside of reaches, the saints off to recess, the points off the peaches, it's alright.  You made it so fine.

It's all fine and alright, show a smile, be the light.  Save your face, feign the race, what comes around goes around.

Hey now rip off the system, it's outside division, make no decision.  It's all fine.

  • 04:24 Lyrics Walked Away

You're thinking I won't mind while taking all that's mine.  Won't make it all the same, you got someone else to blame.  I walked away.

Don't wait for what you take, some miss and hesitate.  The dawn is cold and mystical, if there's a door I'd have to go.  I walked away.

You're talking bout the things that you really oughtta know better now.  You're thinking that the world won't see you for what you are somehow.  You might make it someday and then you'll come back to this cold town.  God help me sugar won't keep that bad medicine down.

Take care of what was mine.  Drink it down with bitter wine.  I'm back to a better time, all to love a friend of mine.  I walked away.

  • 04:57 Lyrics Grass and Gasoline

Get back- she said- aint seen the best of me yet.  No time for a man to leave.  Aint seen but you better believe it.  So bad- you won't win- won't stop what you can't begin.  One day at the top of the hill, one man at the top of the grill.

Topside would be best- aint seen the best of me yet.  Backslide, you won't win.  Not much but I bring 'em in.

Can't say- I don't know.  Don't know which way to go.  Sweet thing and you best believe it- can't wait till you get beneath it.  Baby- I got time.  One more and I'll make you mine.  Ripped up like a magazine- she got grass and gasoline.

Topside would be best aint seen the best of me yet.  Backslide, you won't win.  Not much but I bring 'em in.

I've been sold- I've been sane.  Inside don't feel the same.  Find out what you can and come back for a better man.

  • 04:26 Lyrics You Want It?

I knew her goodness, forgot her name.  I knew her evil, her name's the same but still you want it.

You got the money, you got the fame.  You're somewhat different but feel the same- still you want it.

You want it but it's taking you down.  One day you'll wish you'd kicked what you found.

It comes so easy and seemed so plain.  Sell out your neighbor and change your name but still you want it.

You're not annointed, you've come too soon.  Got something going but changed your tune- still you want it.

I knew her goodness, forgot her name.  I knew her evil, her name's the same but still you want it.

You want it but it's taking you down.  One day you'll wish you'd lost what you found.

.......your gonna like it, I won't take no for long, you're gonna like it...

  • 02:48 Lyrics End of Always

One day when we're older, the wrong weight across your shoulders, I'll wait at the end of always - I hope you find it.

OK - you got to my head.  I'm walking home and I don't mind it.  Don't give a thing about tomorrow, or who you follow.

One day when we're older, the wrong weight across your shoulders, I'll wait at the end of always - I hope you find it.

OK - you got to my skin.  I fall off the cloud that I was walking.  I'll make it home with scotch and sake.  But will you find me?

One day when we're older, the wrong weight across your shoulders, I'll wait at the end of always - I hope you find it.

Always is never ending, but somedays the road is ever bending.  I'd say it ends at Eighth and Broadway.  And that's on my way.

One day when we're older, the wrong weight across your shoulders, I'll wait at the end of always - I hope you find it.
